What is VOC Testing?

The United States Environmental Protection Agency defines Volatile Organic Compounds (VOCs) as gases emitted from certain solids or liquids. VOCs include a wide variety of chemicals. Some of these can cause adverse short and long-term health effects. It’s important to know that concentrations of many VOCs are consistently higher indoors than outdoors. In fact, they can be up to 10 times higher than the levels found outdoors.

There are literally thousands of products that use organic chemicals, including many household products. From varnishes and wax to paints, cleaning and disinfecting products, cosmetics, degreasers, and so many others, many everyday products are made up of organic chemicals. Many building materials and furnishings contain VOCs. Office equipment such as copiers and printers, correction fluids and carbonless copy paper, as well as graphics and craft materials (glues, adhesives, permanent markers, etc.), contain certain levels of VOCs. While some levels are small enough to pose no serious health risks, prolonged exposure may result in health issues.
