TrueFlow Airflow Testing

Most HVAC systems are never actually tested, they’re guessed.

I don’t guess.

At Building Performance Solutions, I perform true HVAC performance testing using the TrueFlow system by The Energy Conservatory (TEC) to measure what your system is actually doing, not what it’s assumed to be doing.

If airflow is wrong, everything is wrong, comfort, humidity control, filtration, and even mold risk.

What TrueFlow Testing Actually Measures

The TrueFlow grid is temporarily installed in place of your air filter to directly measure total system airflow (CFM) at the air handler.
This is critical because:
  • Equipment size does not confirm proper airflow
  • Most systems are operating at significantly reduced airflow
  • Airflow issues are one of the primary drivers of IAQ and humidity problems
This is not a visual inspection… this is measured performance data.

What I Evaluate During Testing

This is not a basic check. I perform a full system performance analysis, including:
  • Total airflow (CFM)
  • Airflow per ton (critical for proper operation)
  • Total External Static Pressure (TESP)
  • Filter pressure drop
  • Coil pressure drop
  • Fan performance and setup
  • Return-side restrictions
  • Supply-side restrictions
  • Duct system deficiencies
  • Airflow imbalance across the home
  • System impact on humidity and indoor air quality
This is the same type of data used in National Comfort Institute (NCI) performance-based diagnostics— not rule-of-thumb HVAC work.

In hot, humid climates like Florida, airflow problems directly translate into:
