Our clients come to us seeking answers for mold, moisture, and indoor air quality issues affecting their health. They often have serious illnesses and sensitivities that are aggravated or worsened by these problems, and in some cases, may even suspect they’re the cause.
Building Performance Solutions is an independent testing and diagnostic company in Southwest Florida that specializes in health-sensitive homes. We regularly work with CIRS patients, mold-sensitive individuals, and families who have experienced failed remediation attempts.
As a trusted, third-party expert, we do not perform remediation work ourselves. Instead, we offer unbiased testing, comprehensive reporting, and remediation protocols that support the work of making your home healthier and safer.
Mold and poor indoor air quality can cause a range of issues, even in healthy people. But mold is especially serious for people with health sensitivities and chronic illnesses like:
We have specialized training as a Certified Remediator for Sensitized Individuals. We understand the triggers of these health conditions and are experts at identifying them in our clients’ homes.
Not all mold remediation is created equal. For individuals with mold sensitivity or CIRS, standard remediation practices often fall short. What may be considered “acceptable” by industry standards can still trigger significant health reactions.
What usually gets missed: fine dust too small to notice, mold inside the HVAC system, contamination carried from one room into another, and dust left in place that continues affecting the people living there after the visible work is finished.
At Building Performance Solutions, we provide Medically Important Remediation Support, a higher level of oversight designed specifically for sensitized individuals and complex cases. This includes:
Unlike generic testing methods, our approach for individuals with CIRS is personalized. We start with an initial assessment to determine which diagnostics we’ll need to run. Standard air sampling captures a moment in time; dust-based DNA testing reflects long-term exposure. We then employ a variety of traditional and specialized testing methodologies, including:
The Environmental Relative Moldiness Index is the starting point for the testing protocol. The test collects dust from various locations within the building. qPCR techniques are used to detect and quantify the DNA of specific mold species. A higher ERMI score indicates a higher relative moldiness in the tested environment.
The HERTSMI-2 scoring system interprets the results of mold testing, specifically focusing on five different mold species known to be health risks in indoor environments. HERTSMI-2 builds upon the ERMI testing method and provides a simplified approach to evaluating indoor mold contamination.
Traditional sampling is the second testing process that we’ll use to write a medically important protocol. The ERMI test gives us an idea of what molds are in the home, but not necessarily where, since one pad is used to collect dust in multiple locations. Common sampling allows us to identify which part of the home is affected by molds and will need remedial efforts.
If traditional mold testing does not reveal issues but you’re still suffering from symptoms, we recommend combining envelope testing with air quality testing for a more thorough inspection.
InstaScope is a real-time diagnostic tool we use to get a complete picture of your home’s indoor air quality. Unlike other sampling methods that take snapshots and require off-site laboratory testing, InstaScope produces results right there and then. It’s a laser-based tool that we bring around your home to analyze which airborne particles are present.
It checks for airborne mold spores, bioaerosols, pollen and organic particulates, and more. This lets us do a baseline screening of your home, perform room-to-room comparisons, and make recommendations for additional testing as needed.
