Types of Mold Testing, Mold Inspection, & Sampling

In some cases, it is necessary to use multiple types of testing, as each test produces specific data. These methods include:

  1. Air-O-Cell Sampling – Particulate is collected from your indoor and outdoor air environment in order to provide an accurate comparison count. This testing method does not evaluate spore viability.
  2. Impaction Sampling – Using gravity or pressure, a petri dish is plated with airborne particulate and incubated for laboratory identification. This method represents a small sample of the entire indoor environment.
  3. EnviroSWAB Sampling – ‘Dust’ that includes viable mold spores is collected, plated to a petri dish and tested in the lab to identify and count live colonies forming units (CFU). In this method, only viable mold that has settled out in the collection location is recognized.
  4. EnviroTAPE Sampling – This method is used where visible mold is present. A tape is applied directly to the mold and lifted. The lab identifies and counts the number of dead or live CFU. This method does not recognize the viability of mold growth: only the presence of mold.
  5. Bulk Sampling – In some cases, it is necessary to conduct laboratory testing on specific construction materials in order to identify and count the number of dead and/or live CFU. This method does not recognize the viability of mold growth: only the presence of mold.
